Description

The Chesterfield Inlet is a fresh to salt water ecosystem joining the community of Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) to Igluligaarjuk (Chesterfield Inlet) located on the western coast of the Hudson Bay. This unique system is key for subsistence harvesting of fish, seal and whales and sustains a commercial fishery in Igluligaarjuk. With the ongoing Meadow bank and Amaruq gold mine projects and associated shipping activities, the Chesterfield Inlet water system is now at stress as reported by local observers. Hunters and Trappers Organizations from Qamani’tuaq and Igluligaarjuk teamed up and reach out to ARCTIConnexion to conduct a community-based water, shipping, and country food monitoring program and collect independent and community-owned information that can guide future actions.

This project in funded through the Nunavut General Monitoring Program.
