Baker Lake (Qamani’tuaq)
Description
Youth from the Environmental Monitoring Program, Arviat Wellness Centre, lead this project since 2015. The community of Arviat is located in a very flat area where the land meets the sea. In summer, the land hosts a great number of migratory caribou and birds with potential for fecal contamination of water. Climate Change brings dryer summers which impacts water levels and fish. The local team monitors traditional sources; streams, lakes, and even underground springs, to track seasonal changes of quality and quantity and keep the community aware and safe.
